Food for Thought: A Chinese-American Culinary Memoir is a semi-bilingual cultural illustrated story- and cookbook, featuring Chinese (specifically Beijing) cuisine. The book blends personal anecdotes, historical context, research, and the author's reflections.
Each dish has its own introduction and recipe page, along with a full-page illustration of the dish, and finally, a narrative and insights page, which contains all the additional information presented in this book.
This edition is unique in its design and construction: the illustrations are printed on translucent vellum, allowing the reader to view the artwork regardless of which page is being read. The English typeface used in the titles is specifically designed by the author and designer Jessica Yu to complement the Chinese typeface used throughout the book.
This book also includes an accompanying coloring book for readers who are interested.
