The Note Nest

The Note Nest is a community stationery exchange inspired by the simple magic of Little Free Libraries. It's a place where anyone can take a card, leave a card, write a note, or rediscover the joy of putting pen to paper. In a world that moves fast and communicates digitally, The Note Nest invites us to slow down, writing something real, and connect — one handwritten message at a time.

Founded by Vanessa Harnik of Notes & Queries, with a concept design of the Nest itself from her husband Leon, the craftsmanship of local nonprofit makerspace Open Works, and an inspired logo created by Hazel Harnik, The Note Nest was born.

Poff Studios is lucky to have been a part of this brilliant project: vectorizing logos and finalizing brand design, along with creating the website.

Candle Care Basics

This is a zine that explores the do's, don't's, and why's of basic candle care. The interest in candles first started after seeing candle care tips about tunneling from TikTok, and the first candle was bought after realizing that an essential oil diffuser just wasn't the right fit. Picking out the perfect scent complements the beautiful aesthetic and warm feeling of lighting a candle, but not knowing how to properly care for a candle can cause many problems, such as tunneling, mushrooming of the wick, sputtering flame, etc.

This zine is a collaboration with Maya Green, who not only had helpful tips on how to take care of candles to maximize burn time and fragrance, but also makes her own candles!

Food for Thought

Food for Thought: A Chinese-American Culinary Memoir is a semi-bilingual cultural illustrated story- and cookbook that contains family recipes from Chinese (Beijing) cultural foods. It also contains personal anecdotes, bits of history, research, and opinions.

Each dish has its own introduction and recipe page, along with a full page illustration of the dish, and finally, an "amorphous" page, which contains all the extra information that is presented in this book.

This book is unique in its design and construction in that the illustrations are printed on a translucent vellum so that the reader can view the illustration regardless of which page is being read (translucency is not shown in the flipbook version to the left). The English typeface used in the titles is also specifically designed for this book to match with the Chinese typeface used.

This book also has a an accompanying coloring book for those who are interested.

Read blog post A Labor of Love for more information on this book.

Strawberry Bliss

This is brand design package that centers around one singular object: a strawberry. The concept is then expanded into a museum exhibit, which is titled Strawberry Bliss — Museum of Aesthetic.

The package begins with the brainstorming and iteration stage, and progresses into finalized logo design, lockups, mockups, color palette, and style sheet, then advertisements and posters.

This package is an example of a possible brand design package, and showcases the creative process along every step of the way, from researched images to sketches to final product.

Aromatic

Done as a "zine" (8 pages & 1 poster all folded from 1 sheet of paper) in a detailed lineart style with mostly flat colors and a hint of highlight, this mouthwatering piece paints a picture that captures many delicious moments.

Through the use of a limited color palette, the illustrations feel very cohesive, and allow for lineart details to really shine through.

The back panel poster was given more detail in the color of the lineart, and the highlights/shadows, due to the size of it compared to each individual page.

For the zine, the bottom left panel is the back cover, the bottom middle panel is the front cover, and all the other spreads are inside spreads. The top 2 spreads are upside down in this view due to the way zines are folded and cut to be put together.

Vendetta

This is a type specimen featuring the typeface Vendetta, in an accordion book format as it challenges the design language in terms of balancing legibility across individual spreads while maintaining a continuous visual flow from one section to the next.

Included in this type specimen are quotes, definitions, anatomical diagrams, historical context, and display elements, all relating to the typeface and the inspiration behind its creation.

This is a particularly satisfying project to revisit, due to its aesthetic nature. There is also a geometric graphic illustration for the back of the book, which is unfortunately not included in the flip book to the left. Please note that the first and last page also use a low opacity color block as a placeholder, and would not be there in a printed format.

Teyvat

This piece is an introduction into the video game world of "Genshin Impact," by Hoyoverse. The game follows the player on their journey across the fictional land of Teyvat to find their lost sibling, meeting many incredible individuals along the way. The game itself includes the most beautiful graphics and a wonderfully detailed storyline.

This project is comprised of 3 pieces: an accordion book and 2 posters.

The accordion book is 12 pages front and back, with the front exhibiting the gorgeous in-game graphics, and the back showing a night sky with descriptions of the characters. The posters contain much of the same information, but in 2 different visual languages.

This piece was made in 2022, and the game has expanded vastly since then, with the addition of many new characters. As a result, this book is indicative of a snapshot in the game's history, rather than a full overview.

Unfortunately, the original files for this project were corrupted and no longer exist, so the embed to the left is compiled of the few images that were left. Unfortunately, those images are much more saturated than the original, and as a result, it is not 100% visually correct. Please see images below for pictures of the process, and the final print.
